Lisa Mitchell Demonstration - Versatility with Pastels
Lisa Mitchell will provide a presentation on the versatility of the soft pastel medium. Lisa will have several varieties of pastels and surfaces available and describe their unique characteristics. She will describe how pastels can be used in conjunction with other mediums such as gouache, acrylic, watercolor, denatured alcohol and turpenoid. Lisa will demonstrate how to paint the subject of water with pastels and create depth by underpainting, glazing and selectively erasing pastel from a sanded surface.
Lisa Mitchell, an award-winning Maryland artist works in oil and pastel. She’s participated in significant plein air competitions including Plein Air-Easton!, Mountain Plein Air, Plein Air Curacao, Easels in Frederick, Wayne Plein Air, Richmond Plein Air to name a few.
Lisa served as President of the Maryland Pastel Society 2005 -2007. She’s a Signature Member of the Maryland Pastel Society, and the Maryland Portrait Painters Society. She’s a member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painter’s Association and also a member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters.
Mitchell has been published in the Pastel Journal, Dec. 2010 with a tour of her art studio and in April 2011 and 2012 featuring several of her award winning paintings.
Lisa received her formal art education at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She painted children’s portraits for 20 years but expanded her focus to include landscapes en plein air and in the studio. Lisa’s paintings are represented at the McBride Gallery in Annapolis and The South Street Art Gallery in Easton. Lisa Mitchell and Palden Hamilton will be the featured artists at the South Street Gallery from July 6 - Sept. 1.
