Nocturne Demo with PAE Alumnus Kirk McBride
Night time painting presents enjoyable challenges. Many scenes that have little interest during the daylight become magical at night. The main difference in painting a town scene nocturne from a daytime painting is that you are painting the effects of artificial light, rather than sunlight, on the subject. This light is often cooler and bluer than warm daylight. Kirk uses a condensed palette of colors and relies on a good lighting system for his canvas' and palette when painting a nocturne. He blocks in the darker areas first and works to the lighter areas as he finishes, remembering to mix paints lighter than what is seen because they will appear darker and duller when viewed in daylight.
