A master of two mediums in the American Impressionist style, Claudia L. Brookes creates loose and colorful, "painterly" oils and watercolors and is especially drawn to beautiful or interesting light in the landscape. She paints to record the beautiful, open countryside surrounding her home in northern Maryland's "horse country," as well as her travels to Colorado, Maine, and other scenic locales. She is also enjoys painting garden scenes, shore paintings and boats, as well as the animal subjects she calls her "critter" paintings. She is especially known for her ability to capture the action and excitement of horse racing, particularly in the difficult medium of watercolor, and offers signed and numbered giclee reproductions of a variety of equestrian subjects. The artist has been an active participant in nearly 50 juried plein air competitions since first gaining an interest in plein air (outdoors, on location) painting. She has been Signature Member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society since 2002 and was elected to Artist Member status in the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association in 2010. Hundreds of her paintings now hang in corporate and private collections in the US and elsewhere.
