"The Art Class" by Karen Mathis
Plein Air the Next Generation is a celebration of the emerging young artist. It has been designed to offer high end arts training to the youngest artist and gives the more experienced student artist their first chance to compete and sell their work in a Quick Draw Competition designed just for them. There is a $5 registration fee, which allows children to rotate through any of the workshops and art stations throughout the day. Artists who wish to compete in Quick Draw the Next Generation must check in and register at the Quick Draw Registration Tent. Registration for Quick Draw costs $10 (or $5 if the student has already registered for workshops). Educational workshops designed especially for students in grades K-6 will run from 10:30am-2:00pm on Sunday, July 21. Each workshop lasts 45 minutes. Spaces in the workshops are limited, but a new class will start every 15 minutes and some arts activities will run non-stop all day. All art supplies will be provided.
Pastel Painting for the Young Artist
Instructor: Susan Horsey
Limit: 10 students
Times: 10:30, 11:30, 12:30
Ms. Horsey has been teaching art for over 14 years. She will guide students through creating a composition using oil pastels. Students may choose to paint all elements from a garden scene or focus on a small detail of the scene such as a flower. All students will leave the workshop with experience using oil pastels, an orientation into composition and a one of a kind plein air painting of their very own.
See it….Simplify it….Paint it!
Instructor: Abby Laible
Limit: 12 students
Times: 10:45, 11:45, 12:45
Ms. Laible works as an art instructor for children ages 4-12 at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA. She has been teaching for more than 8 years and has competed in the Wayne Plein Air Festival twice. This workshop will begin with a discussion on of how to “see” various elements in a landscape such as color, shapes, light and shadow; followed by a simple demo on color mixing. Students will then paint “en plein air” for approximately 30 minutes before sharing their artwork with the group.
Thinking Like an Artist with Landscapes & Nature
Instructor: Jean Stark
Limit: 15 Students
Times: 11:00, 12:00, 1:00
Ms. Stark has a Masters in Teaching grades (K-12). She has experience teaching in schools, private sessions and for arts organizations. In this workshop, students will look at the landscape or a picture of a landscape to create a painting that shows depth in the drawing and atmospheric perspective using values. Using a limited palette students will create the foreground, middle ground and background as they learn how plein air artists make choices regarding color and placement of objects near and far. Students will also look at how to emphasize and create contrast using color. Everyone will look at the work of current and past artists to note the choices artists may make for creating a landscape design with color.
Narrowing Down the Field - Perspective and Focal Point
Instructor: Amy Queen
Limit: 15 Students
Times: 11:15, 12:15, 1:15
Ms. Queen is an artist with a BA in Fine Arts/Graphic Design. She teaches art and Plein Air Oil Painting in private and group sessions to children and adults in North Carolina. In this workshop students will learn how to use a view finder to determine what they should include in a drawing. She will guide students through basic drawing skills and perspective. Students will then choose an interesting focal point and execute their drawings with more detail.
Nature Collages
Instructor: Constance Del Nero
Times: Ongoing
Ms. Del Nero is the Director of ArtReach for the Academy Art Museum. She has a M.Ed in Art Education with a focus on instructing children grades K-8. Examining and observing items found in nature such as leaves, twigs and flowers, students will practice their sketching skills, have the opportunity to use a brayer, acrylic paint and glue their creations to create beautiful collages while learning real art techniques.
Mosaic Mural
Instructor: Jen Wagner
Times: Ongoing
Ms. Wagner is a professional mosaic artist who specializes in community art projects as well as custom installations. Students will use glass, mirror, tile and beads to create a beautiful mosaic mural to be installed on the Avalon Theatre’s 3rd floor reception space upon completion. Everyone is welcome to help artist Jen Wagner cut the tesserae, adhere it to the mural and create a piece of community art to be enjoyed by many for years to come.
