The Meet the Artists Opening Dinner and Paint Out follows in the romantic tradition of a bygone age when patrons hosted picnics on their estates, while artists painted and guests enjoyed an evening of entertaining company and fresh air. The event is the first opportunity to meet the 2014 Plein Air Easton juried artists en masse and get the inside scoop on who to watch throughout the week. This year the event will be held Saturday, July 12.
Once a thriving port created in 1683 by a legislative act of the Maryland General Assembly, Wye Town (Doncaster) was home to busy tobacco warehouses, the Eastern Shore’s first Roman Catholic Church, a renowned silversmith (Thomas Bruff), ocean going ships, the Shore’s first tavern (and consequently its first jail). Despite its rich 17th & 18th century history, the town’s superb port location at the junction of the Wye River, Miles River & Eastern Bay made it remote in the age of rail. Today nothing of the original town remains.
In its 10th year Plein Air Easton returns to Wye Town Farm, the family home of Lisa & Tim Wyman since 1986 and the site of the festival’s first Brunch event. Wye Town Farm features 234 acres of spectacular scenery, with commanding views of the Miles River, Wye River, Bennet Point and Tilghman Point, it is easy to understand why the site was chosen as a Colonial port. The farm features elegant stables, flocks of Welsh Mountain sheep (distinctively black), as well as a wooden walkway through marshland. There is a potential painting around every corner.
The ONLY way to attend the Meet the Artists Opening Dinner and Paint Out is to become a Friend of Plein Air Easton!
